Milan

- Lombardi -

"Milan, for me, was a city of discovery. You find some amazing gardens behind some great houses; I also love finding beautiful galleries and incredible shops, but you have to explore."

- Francisco Costa - Fashionista

- Milan -

Milan, the world capital of fashion and design, is a metropolis of Northern Italy and is the capital of Lombardy. Headquarters of the Italian Stock Exchange, it is a financial center that is also famous for exclusive restaurants and shops. The Gothic Cathedral and the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses the fresco “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci, testify the city’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Most of the palaces and monuments of Milan are concentrated in the city center such as the Duomo, an architectural marvel where one can contemplate the neo-Gothic facade on the outside, surmounted by the imposing spiers and the famous Madonnina which represents the symbol of the city. On the other hand, the Cathedral of Sant’Ambrogio, one of the oldest churches in Milan, is of Romanesque style, and inside you can admire the main altar, a true masterpiece of the goldsmith’s art of the Carolingian age, while at the end of the nave left, there is another entrance, consisting of the portal built by Bramante in the Renaissance period.

Piazza del Duomo is the starting point of the historic city center and tourist center par excellence. The areas in which the city is divided are many: Zona Fiera, RHO PERO, Bande Nere, Beatrice d’Este, Bovisa, Buenos Aires, Certosa, Famagosta, Moscova, Ortomercato, Ospedale Maggiore, Palestro, Parco Sempione, Porta Garibaldi, Porta Genoa, Porta Vittoria, Turro – Gorla – Greco, Viale Cermenate, Viale Corsica, Viale Ortles, Washington area and the Hinterland.

One of the most important cultural centers of Milan is represented by the Royal Palace, an ancient palace of the sovereigns of Milan located in the heart of the city, next to the Duomo, which has become an important cultural center coordinated with three other exhibition sites: the Rotunda della Besana, the Palazzo della Regione and the Palazzo dell’Arengario in which exhibitions and displays are punctually carried out.

Navigli

Without forgetting the Navigli, the ancient network of waterways that allowed river transport between the Ticino, the Adda and the Po and, therefore, the Adriatic Sea. Today, it is a very lively area, especially in the evenings, fashionable, full of places where you can still find, as a reminder of the ancient work of the artisans who traded on the banks of the canals, craft workshops and ancient washhouses covered with wooden roofs.

The Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco)

The Sforza Castle, built in the fifteenth century by Francesco Sforza, is certainly one of the most interesting monuments of the Renaissance period in Milan, inside which there are important artistic collections of the city including the collections of ancient art, the Pinacoteca, the Collection of furniture, in the Corte Ducale, while the Rocchetta houses the ceramics, the goldsmiths, the collection of musical instruments and the Trivulzio Tapestries in addition to the Archaeological and numismatic collections and some important institutions such as the Libraries d’Arte and Trivulziana, the Cabinet of Drawings and the School of ‘Art applied to Industry.

Palazzo di Brera

Palazzo di Brera instead, owned by the Humiliati in the 14th century and later by the Jesuits, opens onto a courtyard surrounded by an elegant arcade in whose center you can see the imposing bronze monument of Napoleon Bonaparte, designed by Antonio Canova. Palazzo di Brera today is home to the Pinacoteca di Brera of the Academy of Fine Arts, the Braidense Library and the offices of the Astronomical and Meteorological Observatory.

Among the typical festivities of the Lombard town we remember on December 7th Sant’Ambrogio, the patron saint of Milan together with San Carlo Borromeo mind or first 10 days of June are dedicated to the Festa del Naviglio, with parades, music and other events.

- Milan fasion week -

Milan Fashion Week is a famous fashion week held twice a year in Milan, Italy. The event with the spring / summer shows is held in September / October each year, while the event with the autumn / winter shows is held in February / March each year. The collections shown during the fashion shows are related to the following seasons and are organized well in advance, so as to allow the production of the articles presented and their acquisition by the shops.

Milan Fashion Week was established in 1958 and is part of the “Big Four”, that is, of the four events considered particularly important as they took place in the fashion capitals. The other three weeks of “Big Four” fashion are those in New York, London and Paris. The program starts with New York, followed by London, then Milan, and ends with Paris.

The Italian fashion week owes its origin to the Italian aristocrat Giovanni Battista Giorgini who, inspired by Eleanor Lambert (considered the mother of fashion week), organized a series of shows at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Thanks to Giorgini, Italian fashion gained international legitimacy; before this moment, in fact, the Italian fashion shows took place mainly in small ateliers or warehouses. His initiative was incredibly successful and caused overcrowding problems in the city of Florence. To solve these problems and manage the traffic of people coming from all over the world more efficiently, the fashion shows were moved to Milan where, in 1975, the first Fashion Week took place.

Towards the end of the 1960s, Rome became the Italian capital of Haute Couture thanks to the promotion in many films, causing the Parisian record of Haute Couture to wobble.

Since the mid-seventies, many designers, including Walter Albini, Missoni, Krizia and many others, began to abandon the high fashion catwalks of Rome, and started a new movement in the fashion scene; it is precisely in these years, in fact, that prêt-à-porter is born on the Milanese catwalks.

Milan Fashion Week is announced by the Italian National Chamber of Fashion, a non-profit organization that regulates, coordinates and promotes the development of Italian fashion and is responsible for organizing events related to Milan fashion. Traditionally the fashion week took place at the Milan Fair in via Gattamelata, but in 2010 the event was organized at the Fashion Hub.

The events dedicated to women’s fashion are the highlight of the fashion week and in particular “Womenswear”, “Milan SS Women Ready to Wear” and “Milano Moda Donna” are the most important fashion shows. The events dedicated to men’s fashion are “Menswear” and “Milano Moda Uomo”.
